How to Use ChatGPT to Get More Job Interviews (3 Prompts)
Most resumes get rejected before a human reads them. These 3 ChatGPT prompts help you tailor faster, write better, and prep smarter.
ATS filters reject 75% of resumes before a human ever sees them. Your resume might be great — polished, accurate, well-formatted — and still not make it through because it doesn't use the exact keywords the role is screened for.
That's not a writing problem. It's a matching problem. And ChatGPT can fix it in about 10 minutes per application.
Prompt 1: Resume Bullet Tailoring
You shouldn't rewrite your whole resume for every job. But you should tailor two or three key bullets to mirror the language in the job description. This prompt makes that fast:
"Here's my current resume bullet for [role]: [paste bullet]. Here's the job description I'm targeting: [paste JD]. Rewrite the bullet to match the JD's language while staying true to my experience."
The critical instruction is "staying true to my experience" — it stops ChatGPT from inflating your background. What it will do is replace "managed projects" with "led cross-functional initiatives" if that's the phrasing in the JD. Small change. Big difference for ATS scoring.
Prompt 2: Cover Letter That Doesn't Sound Generic
Most AI-written cover letters sound like AI-written cover letters. The fix is giving it enough specifics that it can't fall back on filler. This prompt forces that:
"Write a 3-paragraph cover letter for a [job title] role at [company]. My background: [paste summary]. Their job description: [paste]. Make it direct, not generic."
That last instruction — "direct, not generic" — matters more than it sounds. It shifts the output away from "I am excited to apply for this opportunity" and toward an opener that actually references something about the role or company. Edit the first two sentences after generating and you'll have something worth sending.
Prompt 3: Interview Question Prep
Most people prep for interviews by thinking of stories they want to tell. That's backwards. You should start with the questions they're likely to ask — then build your answers. This prompt does the first step for you:
"I have an interview for [role] at [company]. Based on this job description: [paste JD], what are the 5 most likely behavioral questions? For each, give me a STAR-method answer outline using [my background context]."
Paste two or three sentences about your background as context. ChatGPT will predict the questions and scaffold the answers — Situation, Task, Action, Result. You don't have to memorize scripts, just know the shape of each story before you walk in.
